I recently happened across a blog written by a young elementary teacher. She was using her blog to take a survey on what 5 skills her readers considered most important for the future of today’s students. She first narrowed her results to a list of 13 skills. I found the original list of 13 skills to be an excellent set of goals by themselves. From the list of 13, this teacher then asked her readers to narrow the list to the top 5 skills they considered most important.

This was by no means a valid scientific study, but I think you will agree that the resulting list is surprisingly on target as to what we teachers should be instilling in our students every day of every school year–regardless of subject taught. The list came mostly from parents. The comments are mine.

5 Skills Students Need For The Future (in no particular order):

(1) Collaboration Skills (or the ability to work in groups) — Having students working in groups and teaching group skills was an educational fad in the early 1990?s. Fortunately, many teachers saw its promise and the importance of this skill and they incorporated group work into their teaching methods. Now that we are facing a global society, the importance of collaboration can no longer be denied. Those people who cannot work well with others are doomed to be left behind.

(2) Communication Skills — With the expansion of the importance of the Internet and social web sites, the need to communicate effectively is more important than ever. A global society also means we need to be able to effectively communicate with cultures and languages different from our own.

(3) Questioning Skills and Learning to be Skeptical — Within this category, I would include the need to understand logical thinking and statistics. Our students need to recognize bias and propaganda; and they need to know how to avoid the manipulation that can be so easily accomplished with the improper use of both logic and statistics.

(4) Independent Learning – and I would add Life-Long Learning. Our students need to understand that only they control their learning. In addition, they need to understand that much of what they are learning now will become obsolete during their lifetime and much of what they will need to know in the future hasn’t been invented or discovered yet. They will need to be constantly updating their learning or they will be replaced with people who are more informed–they will get left behind.

(5) Problem-Solving Skills — As a retired math teacher, I consider this skill an obvious necessity. In fact, I see the purpose of the other four skills to be making this one possible. Vocational education is postsecondary (high school) education that focus on teaching a specific practical trade, rather than a more abstract education set that is achieved through a liberal arts education. For many years vocational education had the stigma that it was for people who couldn’t make it – for one reason or another – into college, it is now making a resurgence as many technical trades need highly sophisticated training but not the liberal arts background – or tuition expense and time – that a four year college provides, they are the blacksmiths of the modern era.

These schools are founded for a number of reasons, typically growing out of a company’s desire to improve the quality of their recruits or by people or by industry professionals that want to help the younger generation break into a technical aspect of a career that other postsecondary education options to not support.

By focusing on a specific skill set, these schools are able to provide detailed and industry useful education in a shorter time period than four year programs. This advantage is offset by the limited credibility of vocational programs outside their specific career fields. This is the trade off for the narrow focus of the education provided. When considering starting a vocational program, this must be taken into account, more so than with college, participants in vocational programs must have a clear focus and commitment to their specific goal. Yet, for the people with that focus, vocational training and the careers that follow can provide an enriching life experience.

There are also many books available about homeschooling your special needs children.  Some are written specifically for particular disorders and offer teaching suggestions as well as curriculum selection guides.  Most are written by people who have been homeschooling their own special needs children, so they speak with experience and write in every day language, rather than from theory with medical-babble-speak.
